Spotlight: HealthBot - AI and Student-Led Innovation for Health Equity

The HealthBot project was initiated to address a critical challenge: the limited access to preventative healthcare in remote and underserved communities, particularly on Greek islands. The primary goal was to design and build an accessible, low-cost tool that could empower individuals by providing immediate, preliminary health insights and promoting wellness awareness..

To achieve this, HealthBot was developed as an autonomous, AI-powered health kiosk. The system integrates a diverse array of sensors to measure key parameters such as weight, height, and biometric data (e.g., heart rate, SpO2).This data is processed using Machine Learning algorithms for tasks like demographic estimation, while a Large Language Model (LLM) synthesizes the information to offer personalized, non-diagnostic wellness advice..

Importantly, the entire initiative was driven by a team of high school students, serving as a powerful case study in Project-Based Learning (PBL). The project showcases how students can apply advanced STEM concepts to develop tangible solutions for real-world societal problems..

The result is a working prototype (proof-of-concept) that demonstrates a feasible model for improving community health through accessible technology. In recognition of its innovative approach to both health technology and education, the scientific paper detailing the project was accepted for presentation at the 14th Panhellenic Conference “ICT in Education” after evaluation.
